Ralph Smit, a key figure in Swaziland’s alternative, traditional and improvised music scene, has been actively creating a niche to promote alterative projects and collaboration of local and international artists. Growing up in Swaziland he picked up a number of traditional instruments before dedicating a large amount of time to the trumpet, improvisation and electronics. He has played in an incredibly diverse amount of settings and music but retains his individuality that is of a skilled, highly creative and sensitive improviser and composer. He has performed with notable artists such as Tlale Makhene, Chico Antonio, Ronan Skillen, Ariel Zarmonsky, Luca Forcucci, Matchume Zango, Smiles Makama and Sibusile Xaba, as well as artist residencies such as Photo Kathmandu, Nepal.
Mwesigwa Kisaakye, A Ugandan born drummer, raised and resident of Swaziland is one of the first call drummers in the kingdom. He has grown up in the rich gospel traditions, but is not limited to the form. His unique approach and rhythmic sensibilities have made him the resident drummer for Tlale Makhene’s Swazi band, as well as a session musician for the likes of Cameron Ward. He as backed the countries top musicians, played on award winning recordings and is noted as a versatile and hard working drummer.
Both Musicians have performed at the annual Bushfire festival for more than 9 editions collectively; in various formats they have both played all the stages. In 2015, Ralph became the first musician to play all the stages in one day, with two SAMA award-winning projects.
They are also regularly found busking in the capital, and performing in fundraisers for ngo’s that support the Mphaka refugee centre, and other socially responsible initiatives and causes.
